Poem for the New Year

The timekeepers say it’s 2021
Hidden dawn, loaded gun.
Yet it’s quiet here,
The hoarfrost glittering in the field
Weeds outshining the wares at Tiffany’s
Stars of pink, purple, gold
Blinking from broken stems and burrs.
The intermittent pound of a woodpecker
the only sound around
Aside from my boots, crushing the frozen stalks.
